ORIGIN

Oregano is a plant originating from the Mediterranean Basin and Central Asia. Its scientific name is Origanum Vulgare and it belongs to the Lamiaceae family.

It has been used in Egypt and India for centuries, where it is considered a ‘sacred plant’. Oregano was very popular in Ancient Greece and Rome. It was even given to young married couples, as a symbol of love and happiness. Its many properties were discovered in ancient times. Oregano began to be used more and more in the Middle Ages. Nowadays, it is common and well known all over the world.

CULTIVATION METHOD

Oregano is made up of straight stems, sometimes reddish in colour, with dark green leaves. It produces white or pale pink flowers, grouped at the top of the stems.

Oregano grows in chalky, sandy, humus-rich and well-drained soils and the plant can reach a height of up to 1m. To grow, it needs exposure to sunlight and shelter from the wind. It blooms from early July to late September. It can be harvested from early June to late October.
