ORIGIN

Garlic (or Allium Sativum) is a herb belonging to the Alliaceae family, which originates from an area on the border between China and Kazakhstan.

Garlic cultivation can be traced back in writing dating earlier than 2,500 BC. This herb played an important role in Ancient Greece, Egypt and Rome. Garlic began to spread across Europe in the 15th century thanks to Christopher Columbus, who brought it back from Central and South America. It was used by sailors to protect them from some illnesses and poor eyesight. Garlic was not used by North Americans until later, in the 19th century.

CULTIVATION METHOD

Garlic grows in clay, deep, humus-rich and nutrient-rich soils and its vegetable crops measure from 30 to 100cm. Garlic needs exposure to sunlight to grow, even though it withstands cold, and regenerates vegetatively thanks to its bulbils.

There are two varieties of garlic: winter garlic, which is planted between September and October, and spring garlic, which is planted between March and May. Garlic is usually harvested one month after it is planted.
