FIND OUT MORE ABOUT CUMIN

ORIGIN

Cumin, a herbaceous plant often called ‘Moroccan cumin’ or ‘white cumin’, originates from Eastern and Mediterranean countries.

Cumin seeds are often confused with caraway seeds, more commonly called ‘Persian cumin’. Taste-wise, cumin is often compared to anise because of the very aromatic flavour of its seeds, earning it the nickname ‘false anise’.

It belongs to the Apiaceae family and its scientific name is Cuminum Cyminum.

Cumin has been used since the time of the Pharaohs: cumin seeds were found in many tombs. Cumin seeds are also mentioned in the Bible. The Ancient Romans used cumin in bread dough and it was regularly used in the Middle Ages to season soups as well as fish- and poultry-based dishes.

Blooming takes place from July to August and cumin is usually harvested in September and October. Cumin seeds are ready to be harvested when brown and greyish with a subtle and delicate aroma.
